Resource Center

This is the living library of STeP-associated research conducted in support of the Reinvented Toilet and Omni Processor technology portfolios. The reports under the respective technologies target questions traditionally associated with building a business case for a new product, including market, user, and technology focused insights and recommendations. In addition, STeP provides a Field Testing platform that has been used by several technology partners, and the learnings from this effort are provided here. Explore and learn more by downloading and reading our >25 resources to-date.

Reinvented Toilet

The development of the RT technology portfolio was initiated through BMGF’s 2011 Reinvent the Toilet Challenge (RTTC). A range of investments resulted from the RTTC and the current BMGF WSH portfolio is composed of core-processing technologies (back-end components), front-end components (e.g., interfaces), sensors, menstrual hygiene management tools, among others. The components are integrated into complete toilet units for both single-unit reinvented toilets (SURT) and multi-unit reinvented toilets (MURT) settings. Our most recently published resources are shown below. Click to learn more about the RT and view our full list of resources.

Omni Processor

The omni processor portfolio is comprised of community and city-scale fecal sludge treatment systems that eliminate pathogens while producing valuable byproducts. Our most recently published resources are shown below. Click to learn more about the OP and view our full list of resources.

Field Testing and Supporting Activities for the RT and the OP

Field testing with local partners in target markets helps inform design and development. The field testing portfolio includes resources on developing and implementing logistics and management plans and conducting user surveys that help designers understand what users want to inform technology improvement. Our most recently published resources are shown below. Click to learn more about field testing and view our full list of resources.
